I think Jack Black portrayed this guy with a great deal of tenderness and nuance. We come to have sympathy for Bernie, even after the brutal murder.

Once upon a time, in the quirky little town of Carthage, there lived a mortician named Bernie Teide (pronounced “Teeter”). Bernie was known far and wide as the nicest guy around. Marjorie was, without a doubt, the most disliked woman in town. She had a talent for making enemies left and right with her sharp tongue and abrasive personality.
