How to do basic calculations in Tableau, some examples of row-level and aggregate calculated fields.
Basic calculations can add to your data and give your visualization some depth and meaning beyond what everyone sees.
Some my students would really benefit from an introduction to tableau calculations. So I’ve begun to rummage around deeply into the world of tableau calculations. Let me start with basic calculations, Harriet.
The truth is basic calculations can be very useful, especially when you realize there are two distinctly different types. There are row level basic calculations and there are aggregate basic calculations.
To make your first basic calc in Tableau, right click on a field and select create:
You will get this pop-up box:
Then create your first calculation. Most basic row level calculations include things like this:
1. suppose you want to change or parse every line in your data.
2. Or You may want to substitute the state abbreviation for the full name of the state.
