Prostitutes, Pirates and Prohibition!
I never thought that I would visit a place like Galveston. After all, I have never considered Texas a particularly fascinating place to visit. However, I happened to be assigned to the cities of Austin and Houston, Texas, as a contractor back in the glorious summer of 2016. My friend from Long Beach decided to drag me out for a day trip one weekend in July, and she promised to do all the driving all the way from Houston. How could I turn that offer down? Well, I am glad that I assented because it was one of the most enjoyable day trips I’ve had in years.
Visiting Galveston turned out to be one of the great pleasures of being stationed in Houston. Hop on the bus tour in Galveston run by two women who have lived in Galveston their entire life. At a price of only $15.00, one of them will take you through the city and showcase its colorful history, starting with the pirate John Lafitte. She narrates details about the rich prostitutes who built the most substantial and most lavish houses in town and then going onto the beautiful Balinese Room out on the pier. This legendary nightclub was famous for hosting Dean Martin and his Rat Pack and was one of the mainstays of illicit alcohol deliveries during Prohibition. A few celebrities have second homes in this city, including Beyoncé.
I also had a wonderful time at the Lyndon B Johnson Ranch and the Lyndon Johnson Museum in Austin, but…
