Healthcare should be universal, but violence won’t solve this problem, America.

It’s hard not to feel sorry for Luigi Mangione. I mean, really, how can you not? Luigi’s story, like so many others, is heartbreaking — a man pushed to the brink by the denials of a healthcare company, only to find that his act of desperation solved nothing. Violence might grab headlines, but it doesn’t change the grim realities of a system that profits from denying care.

Having Insurance Is no Guarantee of Care

Many of us have been there. Maybe you’ve been denied a necessary treatment or watched someone you love suffer because a faceless insurance company decided their life wasn’t worth the cost. Maybe you’ve even lost someone. I know people who have died because they couldn’t get the care they needed. And yet, picking up a gun and pointing it at the problem doesn’t fix the issue. It’s like trying to fight a tidal wave with a teaspoon.

Luigi’s tragedy is that he became a symbol of the system’s cruelty without actually changing it. Healthcare companies continue to churn out CEOs who make fortunes by denying care to those who need it most. Another Luigi might come…
