Embracing Change: Finding Hope During the Summer Solstice with a Job Search over age 40 other Disasters.

a gorgeous summer day in a field of daisies, with light bouyant clouds above, beckoning to us to float away on blissful strawberry moon romance..

As the summer solstice graces us with its longest day, it brings a time of reflection and renewal. For many, this day is a symbol of light and possibility. However, for those currently facing unemployment, this season can feel more challenging than celebratory. With all the layoffs that have come about, it can seem there is no reason to keep on trying. I faced this one summer a while back. But just to let you know during the past years when the nation faces hurricane and tornado disasters, the best employment possibilities can be realized. In the past, When I was able to volunteer during hurricanes and other disasters, I was able to secure employment with a vast network of our government Emergency Management Agencies.

The Light of the Summer Solstice

The summer solstice, occurring around June 21st, marks the peak of daylight in the northern hemisphere. It’s a time when the sun stands still before reversing its path, a reminder that life, much like the seasons, is full of cycles. For those without employment, this can be a metaphor for personal renewal. Just as the sun will begin to wane, our periods of darkness will eventually give way to brighter days. This time of year encourages us to embrace the light within and around us, seeking out new opportunities and perspectives.

The Challenge of Unemployment

Unemployment can cast a long shadow over our lives, making it difficult to see the potential for growth. It’s easy to feel stuck, much like the sun at its solstice peak, seemingly unable to move forward. However, this period can also be a time of introspection and planning. Use the extended daylight to explore new interests, update your resume, or network with others. The energy of the solstice can serve as a catalyst for change, reminding us that even in our most static moments, there is potential for movement.

Weathering the Storm: Tropical Storm Alberto

As if personal challenges weren’t enough, Tropical Storm Alberto has descended upon Corpus Christi, bringing with it floods and tornadoes. Natural disasters can exacerbate feelings of helplessness and fear, particularly when combined with the uncertainty of unemployment. Yet, these storms also highlight the importance of community and support. In times of crisis, neighbors come together to help one another, offering a sense of solidarity and strength.

For those in the path of Alberto, safety is the priority. Stay informed through reliable sources, have an emergency plan in place, and don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. Remember, just like storms, difficult times in life are temporary. The floods will recede, and the skies will clear, making way for rebuilding and new beginnings.

Finding Hope and Moving Forward

In the midst of the summer solstice, unemployment, and Tropical Storm Alberto, it’s crucial to find moments of hope and resilience. Here are a few ways to navigate these intersecting challenges:

1. Stay Connected: Reach out to friends, family, or support groups. Sharing your experiences can provide comfort and new perspectives. As a contract worker when I was unemployed, I would go spend time at my friend’s house in upstate New York or Maryland. It gave me quiet time to reflect, and to get to know new areas of the country.
2. Embrace Learning: Use this time to acquire new skills or knowledge. Online courses and workshops can open doors to new career opportunities.
3. Volunteer: Helping others can boost your mood and expand your network. It’s also a reminder that everyone faces challenges and we’re not alone in our struggles.
4. Self-Care: Take care of your mental and physical health. Exercise, meditation, and hobbies can provide a necessary break from stress.
5. Prepare for the Future: Whether it’s updating your emergency kit for the storm or revamping your job search strategy, preparation can ease anxiety and foster a sense of control.

As the summer solstice reminds us of the enduring cycle of light and darkness, and as Tropical Storm Alberto challenges our resilience, let us find strength in the knowledge that these moments, too, shall pass. Embrace the change, weather the storm, and look forward to the growth and opportunities that lie ahead. The job I found during the hurricane season lasted almost 2 decades and gave me many new experiences and a decent savings account. I was helped by friends and family and total strangers during this time.

And just remember for the romantics among us, the last full moon this month will be the June’s full Moon — usually the last full Moon of spring or the first of summer — has traditionally been called the Strawberry Moon. Enjoy!
